**Exciting Practice Room NEWS**
Operation Langwith
James Harper, your old Music Society Treasurer, and Phi Clare, your old Langwith Rep, are spearheading a project to restore, refurbish and refurnish the Langwith Piano Rooms.
They have been in discussions with the relevant personnel of Estates and Campus Services, along with all the relevant Porters and Zone 3 Facilities Manager to restore the rooms.
Over the Summer term the following changes were made:
Furthermore, the Music Society, under the direction of James, has decided to spend an additional £2000 of surplus funds on furniture. The following items have been either bought or will be as soon as the roof is fixed:
Most exciting of all, the rooms will be themed! The walls, carpets, blinds (all provided by the University) and posters (which will be bought by Music Society) will be colour-coded to represent the following themes:
Room 1 – Jazz: Single dark green wall, with paler green on all other sides, and earthy brown curtains to reflect a smoky jazz lounge. The posters will be of cherished jazz musicians and jazz artwork.
Room 2 – Musicals: Single blue wall, with paler blue of all other sides, and purple blinds to reflect a glitzy Broadway show. The posters will be of famous musicals and iconic Broadway scenes.
Room 3 – Opera: All walls will be coloured terracotta, with Mediterranean-green blinds to convey an Italian landscape. The posters will be of beautiful opera advertisements and inspirational opera performances.
Room 4 – Symphony: One wall will be brassy-gold, with a paler version of it on the other walls with deep red blinds. The black of the piano and furniture will blend well to create the feeling of a concert stage. The posters will be of symphony-related images, including conductors and orchestras in mid-performance.
Any enquiries regarding the practice rooms can be directed to the chair Charlotte cap505@york.ac.uk
All Music Society members have access to four practice rooms in Langwith College, situated behind the lecture theatre.
There are four practice rooms:
The rooms can be book for an hour at a time from Langwith porters' lodge. Members will need to hand over their membership card in exchange for a key to the room.
Practice rooms are available for members' use all year round (including all vacations) although we are unable to accept new members during vacations so you must sign up during term time.
Please note that amplified music is only permitted on Wednesdays from 1pm to 6pm and on Saturdays and Sundays from to 2pm to 6pm. This is so that ALL of our members can benefit from use of the practice rooms without having to compete against louder instruments.
It is possible to check online whether the rooms are available. Follow these steps: 1) Follow this link: http://www.york.ac.uk/univ/mis/fmstudent/. 2) Select 'Room Bookings' on the left hand side and click on 'View Room Bookings'. 3) Enter your computer username and password. 4) Select the relevant date(s) and select 'MP - Music Practice Rooms' in the 'Building' drop-down list and click on 'View List'. 5) All current and past bookings will appear.
NOTE: If you are accessing 'Plan-on' off-campus, you must first set-up a VPN following this link http://www.york.ac.uk/services/cserv/net/vpn/. (It's really easy, don't worry!)
It is possible to book rooms in advance. Ask the Langwith porters to reserve particular dates and times. Please be sensible and do not forget to turn up! If the reservation system generates too many complaints it will be scrapped.
